Oestrogen is thought to protect the brain

A study is thought that Oestrogen can helps to protect the brain from declines and thinking ability. Might removal of the ovaries, which secreate the hormone, impair a women cognitive ablities. A study saw 2961 women and about half of the women had one of or both their ovaries removed for reasons unrelated to cancer, such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts. During the next 25 to 30 years, 248 of the women developed dementia. Those who had an ovariectomy before menopause, regardless of the reason, were about one and a half times more likely to have dementia than were women who did not have any surgery.

The younger the women were when the ovaries were removed, the more likely they were to have developed dementia. Who may be affected?. Women who have an ovariectomy. In USA, about half of the 600,000 women each year who undergo hysterectomy- removed of hte uterus, also have theirs ovaries removed, usually in hopes of preventing ovarian cancer. Ovaries also are removed to treat ovarian cancer and oestrogen related tumours, such as breast cancer.
